1 The Ship
Riverside hangout The Ship in Wandsworth is an alfresco institution. Its roomy Thames-side terrace, now thankfully furnished with space heaters, is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink in the fresh air, maybe catch a sunset, maybe enjoy a Scotch eggs or a Sunday roast. There’s also a covered deck, and the pub has a great selection of wines and craft beers. Bookings required at weekends.

Konnigans is exactly what a neighbourhood restaurant should be – reliably good, friendly and there for you with takeaways during lockdown! Serving a modern British menu, this hotspot on Old York Road has an outside dining area out front, covered by an awning, that’s perfect for people watchers. Plus, canny as ever, they’ve also set themselves up as a business hub with free wi-fi in the daytime.

3 London Stock
London Stock, the smart Ram Quarter restaurant that champions British produce and innovative cooking, has transformed its alfresco dining space into a covered, heated, socially distanced sanctuary. They also have a cracking Sunday roast menu featuring starters like French onion soup and venison tartare, with mains of roast sirloin of beef, beef Wellington and pan-fried gilt-head bream, plus hearty desserts like bread and butter or sticky toffee pudding.

4 The King’s Arms
The King’s Arms has an absolutely cracking beer garden, and for winter, it’s covered with a huge tent complete with heaters. The garden huts – perfect for drinks with your social bubble – now have heaters too. You can also set up shop here to work during the day if you’re sick of your four walls, with free wi-fi, and business meetings are a thing here too.

5 The Crane
The Crane, officially the oldest pub in Wandsworth, has a great beer garden and great food, specialising in gourmet burgers, hot dogs and pizzas. They also do an Aussie-style chicken parma (breaded chicken covered in tomato sauce, mozzarella and Parmesan). The smartly decked out beer garden has a mix of tables and sheltered booths, plus a couple of space heaters. Bookings are recommended, although it’s first-come-first-seated on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Street food was basically made for social distancing – plenty of outdoor space, a counter separating you from your food server at all times, contactless payment and outside seating. StreetCube, which has elevated street food to sustainable street gastronomy, is open daily on the piazza outside Southside Shopping Centre, and even runs a Sustainable Organic Market championing sustainably farmed produce at weekends, meaning you can even shop alfresco!

7 The Grapes
The Grapes is one of those cosy, wood-panelled pubs that are great for hiding away in the winter, but if you need to keep it alfresco they have a heated patio and beer garden to the rear with plenty of seating and a conservatory that opens up onto the garden. The Ram Pub Company venue, which underwent a smart refurb during lockdown, serves Young’s cask ales and classic pub grub and often has live music evenings.

8 The Alma
The Alma, a Young’s pub with an excellent selection of beers, a thoroughly decent menu featuring brunch and Sunday roasts and even a Secret Cellar with a fancy selection of wines, has a few tables dotted about outside. They get snapped up pretty quickly though, so your best bet is to book in advance, especially at weekends. Download the Young’s On Tap app for contactless ordering and payment.
