5 WAYS TO EAT LIKE ROYALTY ON THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY

The Queen’s official 90th birthday falls on 21 April 2016, and while this won’t be the main focus of the celebrations – which continue into May and June – it’s a good enough reason for us to start celebrating by embracing London’s best royal-themed afternoon teas and treats! The Resident roundups up five of the best royal feasts…

1 King Crab Royale, One-O-One Restaurant
Award-winning seafood restaurant One-O-One, located within the five-star The Park Tower Knightsbridge, is offering up a special dish to mark the Queen’s birthday – the King Crab Royale. The dish will be exquisitely crafted using the finest ingredients including gold leaf, wild garlic, caviar, quail’s eggs, British asparagus, rhubarb and lemon to complement the Norwegian Royal King Crab. Beautifully presented in the shape of a crown, with flashes of gold, it will be priced at £21 and is the perfect way for Royalists, foodies and Londoners to celebrate the landmark birthday of the UK’s longest reigning monarch. The King Crab Royale will be available from 21 April to 18 June, coinciding with the end of the Queen’s official birthday celebrations.

2 The Queen’s Royal Afternoon Tea, Lanes of London
Lanes of London bar and restaurant at the London Marriott Hotel, Park Lane, launches The Queen’s Royal Afternoon Tea, available throughout April until September. Inspired by some of Her Majesty’s favourite dishes and ingredients, The Queen’s Royal Afternoon Tea will include white peach melba macaroons (representing the white peaches grown in the greenhouses of Windsor Castle), classic interpretations of the Victoria sponge cake and Coronation chicken sandwich (first created in honour of the Queen’s 1953 coronation), and an Earl Grey mousse in waffle cones (her favourite tea). Priced at £39 per person (£45 with a glass of champagne). Add a glass of Her Majesty’s favourite cocktail, a Gin and Dubonnet Cocktail, for an additional £8. Available daily from midday until 5pm.

3 Royal Stag Burger, Mac & Wild

4 Royal Afternoon Tea, The Arch London
Five-star hotel The Arch London has devised a perfectly patriotic Royal Afternoon Tea featuring a procession of very British dishes including chicken liver parfait with spiced fig chutney, rare roast beef, Eaton mess, Victoria sponge, Battenberg and strawberry tart. The Royal Afternoon Tea, priced at £25 per person or £38 with a glass of Tattinger Brut Reserve, will be available from 1 May until 31 July from 3pm until 6pm and can be taken in the hotel’s Martini Library, Hunter 486 restaurant or Salon de Champagne lounge.

5 Marcus Wareing’s custard tart
Marcus Wareing’s winning custard tart from the 2006 Great British Menu is a dessert fit for a Queen. The original recipe for this tart was Marcus’s grandmother’s, but it was made famous when he cooked it for the Queen’s official 80th birthday lunch at Mansion House in 2006. It has remained on his menu at Marcus at The Berkeley Hotel ever since – at the moment you can sample it as a petit-fours. More about the Queen’s Birthday

The first of two major celebrations will actually take place from 12-15 May, with a 90-minute parade of 900 horses and more than 1,500 performers in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. On 11 June it’s The Queen’s Birthday Parade when the traditional Trooping the Colour will take place on Horse Guards Parade from 10am. Then, on 12 June, The Patron’s Lunch, sees The Mall transformed into a giant street party for The Patron’s Lunch, with 10,000 guests eating a picnic lunch and being entertained by street performers and circus acts in the presence of The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
