Chit Chaat Chai

The colourful Chit Chaat Chai reopened its doors on Old York Road on Saturday 4 July, just in time to celebrate its sixth birthday! This wonderful eatery serves up classic Indian street food, samosas, biryani and, of course, chaat, in contemporary and rather delicious fashion. New safety measures include a smaller serving team, a limited capacity and reduced hours (open Weds-Fri 4pm-10pm & Sat-Sun 1pm-10pm).
356 Old York Road, Wandsworth SW18 1SS;

Konnigans has been serving takeaway pints, coffee, smoothies and food (including a takeaway Sunday roast) for most of lockdown, but the restaurant reopened fully on 9 July. Serving a modern British menu with influences from the Mediterranean and South East Asia, you can now enjoy this Wandsworth Town favourite at a more leisurely pace. Plus, since Old York Road has been pedestrianised for summer, there’s even more space for alfresco dining. Open Mon-Weds & Sun 7am-3pm, and 7am-9pm Thurs-Sat.
344-346 Old York Road, Wandsworth SW18 1SS;

The Alma
Reopening 20 July

The Alma, a Young’s pub, is one of those taking a more cautious approach to reopening, holding off throwing its doors open till 20 July. Impromptu pub trips will, sadly, not be a thing for a whole yet though – instead, we’re being asked to book ahead and to download the Young’s On Tap app to order and pay. (The same applies for The Ship, also a Young’s pub, and it’s lovely alfresco terrace, in case you were wondering.)
499 Old York Road, Wandsworth SW18 1TF;

Pad Thai Story

Pad Thai Story, which specialises in, wait for it… pad thai, has been doing a roaring trade in deliveries and takeaways over the last few weeks. Pad thai with chicken, prawns, grilled pork, and even pad thai tempura all feature on the menu, but if you fancy a king prawns pa-nang curry, then that’s totally OK too. Open 12pm-9.30pm for takeaways, deliveries and eating in.
543 Old York Road, Wandsworth SW18 1TQ;

Over & Under

Over & Under, located just outside Wandsworth Town Station, has been open for takeaways everyday throughout lockdown, from coffees to bacon baps. Get your latte art and pastry fix right here. Should you be feeling anti-social, you can also order breakfast essentials via Deliveroo and Uber Eats, and get your beans delivered from their online coffee shop.
Outside Wandsworth Town Station SW18 1SU;

Gail’s Bakery

Gail’s, the bastion of bread and brownies, has been running a takeaway and click-and-collect service for pretty much the whole of lockdown, but from 4 July they added little tables and chairs outside for prolonged enjoyment of your coffee and croissant. You can still takeaway as many cinnamon buns, sausage rolls, cheese straws and coffee as you calorie/caffeine count will allow, however. Open 8am-5pm.
350 Old York Road, Wandsworth SW18 1SS;

Bayley & Sage

After a brief hiatus, Bayley & Sage on Old York Road reopened on 30 April – perks of being an essential retailer! The deli-cum-wholefoods-store-cum-pantry sells fresh food with a focus on health, including their own-label olive oil, crackers, wines and cheese. So if you’ve hit the comfort food hard over lockdown, you know where to go… Open 8am-9pm seven days a week.
509 Old York Road, Wandsworth SW18 1TF;

Much more than a butchers, Cleavers also supplies fresh veg, a selection of wines and great pies, pasties, rotisserie chicken, hot, ready-to-go sandwiches and even grilled halloumi & veg skewers. Cleavers has been open throughout lockdown to help keep our fridges stocked, and is open from 7am till 7pm daily (closes at 5pm on Sundays).
362 Old York Road, Wandsworth SW18 1SP;

Viet Town
Viet Town Deliveroo’d its way through most of lockdown, but the Vietnamese restaurant, which serves noodles, pho, rice dishes, spring rolls and more inspired by rural Saigon, is now back in business for dining-in. Viet Town even has a few outside tables for those who prefer to dine alfresco. Open 12pm-3pm & 5pm-10pm weekdays (closed Monday), 12pm-3pm & 5pm-10.30pm Fri-Sat, and 12pm-8pm Sun.
513 Old York Road, Wandsworth SW18 1TF;

Crumbs & Doilies
Reopening date (for Soho shop) unconfirmed

They also offer Rainbow Cake bake-at-home kits, which are currently sold out but will be back in stock on 15 July.

The Crane
Reopening 28 July
The Crane, officially the oldest pub in Wandsworth, is taking a more cautious approach to reopening, with plans to reopen on 28 July once the dust has settled a little. The pub has a great beer garden, for those who prefer to keep things alfresco, as well as plenty of seating indoors to help you keep your distance from fellow drinkers. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for the latest.
