London’s Most Indulgent Veganuary Menus

With the vegan, plantivore and flexitarian movements growing ever stronger, London’s restaurants are getting more experimental with their plant-based offerings. Here, The Resident picks out some of London’s most indulgent Veganuary menus…

1 Emilia’s Crafted Pasta, Aldgate
When Veganuary and International Pesto Day meet, what do you get? Three awesome vegan pesto dishes at Emilia’s Crafted Pasta! Available at the Aldgate restaurant only from 6-31 January, vegan pasta lovers are invited to give the dishes a whirl for £10 each – or all three for £25 – and vote for their favourite – the most popular one will then become a permanent fixture on the main menu. Choose from sundried tomato, taggiasche olives, capers and pine nuts pesto; pistachio, basil and pine nut pesto with sautéed cherry tomatoes; and borlotti beans, pine nuts and basil pesto with chilli oil.

2 Avobar, Covent Garden
Love avocado? Then off to Avobar with you this January, which has added new vegan-friendly dishes to its menu for January. The fresh, wholesome menu incorporates avocado into every dish. Highlights of the new vegan menu include the Avo Bun Burger, an avocado bun with sweet potato and red lentil patty, vegan slaw and coconut and herb dressing; Smashed Chilli Avo with ‘toast’ made from sweet potato with coconut labneh; Superfood Salad with curly kale, quinoa, beetroot, pickled carrot, red cabbage, tofu and half avocado with parsley drizzle; and Vegan Tacos with roasted sweet potato, black beans and avocado, plus herbed dressing on corn bread tacos.

3 The Athenian, various locations
The vegan menu at The Athenian draws on Greece’s healthy eating traditions and abundant fresh produce from the natural landscape to create authentic vegan and vegetarian street food specialities. In the UK, Greek food is often associated with grilled meats and moussaka, but The Athenian, which has six locations across London, has been challenging these misconceptions by offering an array of plant-based options. Try vegan gyros, which combine seitan marinated in herbs, lemon juice and olive oil served with vegan Athenian sauce and oregano flecked fries, the tomato croquettes or courgette fritters, generously drizzled with an array of plant-based sauces, or the flourless brownie. 

4 Vegan dishes Kaspar’s at The Savoy, the Strand
At the fancier end of the Veganuary menu spectrum you’ll find Kaspar’s at The Savoy. Recently appointed Head Chef Joost Bijster has created a vegan-friendly a la carte menu that will be refreshed almost monthly to showcase contemporary seasonal dishes. Highlights include cauliflower steak with broccoli puree, broad beans and pickled potatoes, and grilled farm vegetables with Romesco sauce, fregola and puffed amaranth. Kaspar’s at The Savoy also offers panoramic views of the river Thames and a luxurious Art Deco-inspired interior. Definitely one for the special occasions list!

5 BŌKAN 37, Canary Wharf
BŌKAN 37 is embracing plant-based indulgence this Veganuary with Executive Chef Guillaume Gillan’s five-course vegan tasting menu. Available from 9-31 January, the vibrant, seasonal menu will feature dishes such as celeriac tagliatelle salad with sesame dressing, roasted potato and white truffle; butternut squash and coconut veloute with pearl barley and bitter leaves; and Crapaudine beetroot with pomegranate and Scots pine. For dessert, it’s a dairy-free and egg-free offering of poached English pear, choco sauce, almond and pear sorbet. Priced £65pp.

6 Vegan Afternoon Tea at InterContinental London Park Lane
The InterContinental London Park Lane isn’t up for watching waistlines this January, instead it has created a vegan afternoon tea for an indulgent Veganuary. The English classic has been given a plant-based twist, with sandwiches like tandoori spiced mushroom with piquello pepper mousse and charcoal bread, and char-kissed zucchini ribbons with shallot jam on white bread, and savoury treats such as honey roasted butternut squash with baby spinach tart. There will be vegan sultana and plain scones too, and dessert bites like chia seed pudding, chocolate banana cake and raspberry mousse on matcha shortbread. Priced £49pp including a glass of Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut Champagne or £78 with unlimited Perrier-Jouët Champagne for 90 minutes.

7 Yard Sale Pizza, east London
Yard Sale Pizza has always offered vegan specials, but the dough-lovers are going above and beyond this Veganuary by launching a new trio of vegan pizzas that will sit permanently alongside the regular menu. A highlight is their tribute to the American Hot, with Tomato sauce, vegan mozzarella, guindilla chillies and a vegan pepperoni that the team created in-house. Then there’s the Truffle Shroom, with vegan mozzarella, roasted mushrooms, truffle oil, vegan parmesan and black pepper, and The Texas VBQ, with THIS Isn’t Chicken Nuggets, a BBQ sauce base, sweetcorn, red onion, guindilla chillies and Holy F*ck Vegan Mayo. Plus, there’s also a vegan version of their best-selling cheese & Marmite garlic bread. Available from Tuesday 7 January.

8 The Piano Works, West End & Farringdon
London’s first late-night, audience-requested live music venue is offering a selection of plant-based food and drink options this Veganuary. The pre-theatre menu offers the likes of flaky Tofu Fish and Chips and warming Vegan Shepherd’s Pie, as well as vegan cocktails such as the Coco Espresso Martini (with Belvedere vanilla vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso, coconut milk and pureé), and the Matcha Martini (with Bombay Sapphire gin, matcha, lime, aquafaba, and fresh basil).

9 Dirty V*gan, home delivery
Dirty V*gan’s witty, pun-based menu is completely plant-based, yet still pumped full of all your favourite guilty pleasures. Riding the wave of veganism and flexitarianism, popular cuisines from around the world are reinvented with jackfruit, tofu and aubergine. January specials including Doggy Style (hot dogs), as well as alcoholic beverages including the Stiff Irishman (vegan Irish Cream, similar to Baileys) along with the Stiff Jamaican (vegan rum punch). Plus it’s delivered right to your door via Deliveroo, JustEat and UberEats, saving you from having to venture outdoors in the bleak midwinter.

10 Carluccio’s, various locations
Following the success of its award-winning vegan croissant launch, Carluccio’s is introducing a tortelloni pasta filled with Veganzola – a plant-based Gorgonzola – as part of its new Cucina Verde Veganuary menu. The little pasta parcels of the Tortellini di Veganzola are also filled with spinach, semi-dried tomato pesto and walnuts in a rich spinach sauce. Other Veganuary dishes, available from 8 January until 11 February, include Gnocchi e Zucca (pan-fried gnocchi and butternut squash with spinach pesto, crispy sage and pesto), Panella di Ceci (Carluccio’s take on crispy chickpea fritters, a popular Sicilian street food), and a brand-new Chestnut Hummus. The regular full vegan range also includes the Veganesca Spaghetti, a vegan take on the traditional Puttanesca, and the Veganese, the popular plant-based version of the Chicken Milanese.

11 Gordon Ramsay restaurants, various locations
Gordon Ramsay restaurants are embracing Veganuary with innovative plant-based dishes available throughout January. Dishes include a Beet Wellington, comforting pasta such as rigatoni with kale, walnut pesto and olives, a ‘creamy’ dairy-free wild mushroom and truffle risotto, or veggie burgers with a twist. Desserts include a vegan sticky toffee pudding with pear and pecan toffee sauce, tofu chocolate truffle torte, or pineapple and kiwi carpaccio. Participating restaurants include Bread Street Kitchen, Heddon Street Kitchen, Union Street Café, Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill, maze Grill Park Walk, maze Grill Royal Hospital Road, London House, The Narrow and York & Albany. 12 Counter Culture X Alter, Clapham
Robin Gill, founder of Counter Culture in Clapham, is inviting chef Andy Hogben of vegan pop-up Alter into the kitchen for a Veganuary, running from 7 January all the way through to 28 March. Hogben, formerly of Dabbous, Som Saa and Kym’s, will cook a nightly changing vegan menu, as well as collaborative Sunday night feasts with his friends from Root and Som Saa (click here for dates and to book). He draws inspiration from a multitude of street food cultures across the globe, so the super flavourful dishes will include the likes of water chestnut wonton dumplings, fermented yellow bean ramen broth, crispy roti and sweetcorn chaat with tamarind and caramelised ‘whey’, Malaysian laksa with oyster mushrooms, and a spicy mapo tofu with enoki tempura.

13 Ella Canta, Park Lane
Acclaimed Mexican chef Martha Ortiz has been busy creating a stunning new plant-based menu, launching at Ella Canta on 9 January. We Eat Colour is a culinary response to the stories and spirit of her home country, Mexico, showcasing how her native cuisine lends itself to veganism. With abundant plant-based ingredients grown across the country, Martha has combined these with British-isles favourites to create a selection of inspired dishes. Hero dishes will include squash ceviche enriched with the floral and punchy citrus flavours of Lemon Verbena; a beautifully green cauliflower-based dish which balances floral flavours with fragrant coriander; and a traditional Horchata soup with vegan almond ice cream.

14 Patty & Bun, various locations
Patty & Bun is embracing those Veganuary vibes this January with the launch of three new plant-based versions of their famed burgers. The vegan Hot Chick will be made using a THIS Isn’t Fried Chicken Patty (which has a texture ridiculously similar to meat), topped with coleslaw, pickled cucumbers, lettuce and smoked garlic aioli. The vegan Ari Gold will feature a plant-based patty with vegan cheddar, lettuce, tomato, caramelised onions, ketchup and a smokey vegan P&B mayo – you can top it with THIS Isn’t Bacon for a meaty, flavoursome kick. Then there’s the vegan Smokey Robinson, with a plant-based patty, vegan cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickled onions, THIS Isn’t Bacon, ketchup and vegan smokey P&B Mayo. Available at Patty & Bun’s new Kingly Street site, as well as Liverpool Street, Pembridge Road, London Bridge, Richmond Road and Goodge Street, from 6 January.

15 Theo Randall at the InterContinental, Park Lane
Chef Theo Randall is charging headfirst into Veganuary with a fully vegan menu at his Park Lane restaurant. Showing that veganism doesn’t mean compromising on indulgence, the menu, curated by Theo himself, is bursting with rich Italian flavours to appeal to vegans and non-vegans alike. Dishes include deep-fried violet aubergines, courgettes, squash and Jerusalem artichokes with fragrant sage, chilli and mint sauce; minestrone verde, a rich Tuscan bean soup with Swiss chard borlotti beans, tomato, celery and carrots; and Acquarello risotto with wild porcini and Portobello mushrooms, garlic and parsley.

16 The Rooftop St. James at The Trafalgar
The Rooftop St. James has partnered with Veuve Clicquot to launch an indulgent plant-based treat in its Sky High Winter Chalet – a new Vegan Fondue created from almond milk, tahini, vegan cheese, lemon and white wine). The decadent vegan fondue, served with Veuve Clicquot champagne or non-alcoholic alternatives, is available from 4 January priced £30 for two people. Throughout the month, The Rooftop will also be offering a Vegan Antipasti Platter (Beetroot Falafel, Soy and Sesame Glazed Button Mushrooms, Truffle Cauliflower Dip, Pickled Vegetables & BBQ Vegan Sausage), priced at £16 for two people. The Rooftop’s glass conservatory is a super cosy setting for winter, complete with snug dining pods with tree stump seats, twinkling tea lights and natural twig wreaths.

17 Chokhi Dhani, Battersea
Chokhi Dhani restaurant, bar and terrace in Battersea is launching a brand new vegan menu in celebration of Veganuary. Designed by Chef Naseem Qureshi, the menu provides a delicious education in the exciting flavours and cuisine of the ancient princely state of Rajasthan. Dishes include Aloo Gobi (Seasonal Potatoes, Fresh Cauliflower, Onion, Tomato, Turmeric & Chilli), Baingan Bhartha (Roasted Aubergine Ash & Cumin), Dal Tadka (A Combination Of Five Lentils) and Aloo Hara Pyaaz (Diced Potatoes With Spring Onions). Chokhi Dhani also sells handmade art, crafts and jewellery created by traditional artisans in its village in India.

18 OXBO Bankside
OXBO Bankside, a spacious and modern restaurant located between the Southbank and Borough Market, is upgrading its weekend brunch offering by adding some bespoke plant-based dishes for Veganuary. Created by Executive Head Chef Ollie Couillard, the brunch menu will feature four courses and unlimited prosecco for £49pp for a maximum of two hours (or £35pp without prosecco). Dishes include Grilled Courgette, Lemon, Pomegranate & Mint salad Pumpkin & Jackfruit Curry, Champagne Jelly & Seasonal Fruit Compote, and Vegan Waffles.

19 Hovarda, Soho
Chef and author Jay Morjaria is taking over the kitchen at Soho’s Hovarda this January with a completely vegan menu. Morjaria, who founded London’s first meat-free cooking school in 2013, has devised a completely plant-based lunch menu infused with East Asian flavours, offering a preview of what’s to come at his forthcoming restaurant JAE. The JAE at Hovarda menu will be completely vegan, featuring seasonally led ingredients and techniques, with sharing dishes such as chicory, kohlrabi and carrot salad with a yuzu and Shiso vinaigrette, coal-roasted leeks with Kimchi Romesco, roast cauliflower with a vegan XO sauce, and Brussel sprout Pajeon (a Korean pancake) with creamy sesame dressing and fermented chilli. JAE at Hovarda will be the third instalment of the restaurant’s monthly Lunch Takeover Series. 20 COYA Mayfair and COYA Angel Court
COYA is celebrating Veganuary with vegan menus at both its Mayfair and Angel Court locations. The award-winning group’s sharing plates of traditional Peruvian dishes, elevated with Japanese, Chinese and Spanish cooking techniques, lend themselves perfectly to the creation of exciting vegan menus. They will even be serving up a special vegan Pisco Sour cocktail. In Mayfair, vegan dishes include Jerusalem artichoke with purple potato, smoked mushroom tiger and aji limon, celeriac tacos with winter truffles and white sweet potato with pumpkin, aji panca and vegan cheese. At Angel Court, vegan dishes include cauliflower tacos with aji amarillo, red chillies and sherry vinegar, leeks with aji amarillo, Jerusalem artichoke and rice, and hispi cabbage with paprika and soy.

21 Biff’s x BrewDog Dalston’s Crispy Fried Jackfruit Specials, Dalston
With its signature menu of Crispy Fried Jackfruit (CFJ) burgers and wingz, Biff’s has been conjuring up indulgent, plant-based comfort food since 2017.Raising the bar once again, Biff’s will be offering four new weekly CFJ specials in January, each available for one week only. The most popular dish will then be added to the Biff’s Jack Shack menu permanently. From 10-16 January, it’s Biff’s Slinger Tower Burger, from 17-23 January, it’s Crispy Fried Nugz, from 24-29 January, it’s The Big Big Jack (a two CFJ patty burger with burger sauce, American cheeze, dill pickles, red onion, iceburg lettuce and fresh tomato), and finally, from 30 January till 6 February, it’s the Bangin’ Bucket meal, featuring six pieces of original CFJ wingz, large cajun-dusted fries, mustard mayo slaw and homemade porcini gravy. 22 Bob Bob Ricard, Soho
You might be surprised to know that Bob Bob Ricard caters for vegans. There aren’t a huge number of dishes, but what they do have is rather opulent. Plant-based dishes include Truffled Potato & Mushroom Vareniki (traditional dumplings served with crispy onions and shimeji mushrooms; also available at Bob Bob Cité on Leadenhall Street) and Tolma a La Tolstoy (courgette and vine tomato stuffed with spiced chick peas, bulgur wheat and quinoa, served with zhug and tomato coulis. For dessert, try Le Colonel, a lemon sorbet served with Russian Standard Platinum vodka, or the rum and raisin rice pudding with vintage Panama rum, coconut, caramelised banana and mango sorbet.
