1 Whole Beast x The Fat Walrus

Ex-Coal Room chefs, Sam and Alicija Bryant have found a permanent home for their nose-to-tail pop up, Whole Beast, in New Cross. Now charcoal grilling out of popular neighbourhood boozer The Fat Walrus, the pair's roast is a showstopper. Go a smoked whole chicken for two, or mutton shoulder or smoked ox cheek and roast rump cap. Veggies don't go hungry either with a coal roast vegetable plate, which like the other mains, comes with all the trimmings.

2 Dorothy and Marshall, Bromley

Find this neighbourhood all day dining resturant in the old, Grade II listed Bromley Town Hall. Serving up refined, modern British dishes, the Sunday lunch menu is compact but considered. Roasts come drizzled in homemade gravy and baked cauliflower cheese as one of the standard trimmings. Non-meat eaters have a couple of options too.

3 Coal Rooms, Peckham

As a social enterprise, Coal Rooms reinvests over half of its profits in training and employment opportunities for the homeless. As a restaurant, it serves up modern European dishes, cooked over its bespoke coal-fired grill. Open for all-day dining, the venue's roasts are a couple of steps up from your average pub Sunday lunch, think ethically sourced produce prepared so natural flavours sing.

4 The Palmerston, East Dulwich

The Palmerston in East Dulwich, overhauled its kitchen to keep its bold, modern European dishes at their best. And the convivial gastro-pub serves up a fabulous Sunday roast. The Sunday menu has a host of small and large plates if you want a non-roast Sunday lunch, but there’s also roast beef, lamb, fish, chicken, pork to choose from too.

5 The Crooked Well, Camberwell

This neighbourhood pub is housed in a single high-ceilinged room replete with chandeliers and velvet banquettes, and regulars include local celebs Florence Welsh and Erin O’Connor. Also, it never fails to provide. Offering an elevated, modern take on traditional roasts, you’ve got a host of options including vegetarian and vegan. All roasts come with trimmings, and you can also get sides of pigs in blankets an and cauliflower cheese.

6 The Guildford Arms, Greenwich

The Guildford Arms’ chef-patron Guy Awford is all about the seasonality and quality of the food he serves. Everything the kitchen serves is made on the premises and if you like your meats and veg infused with herbs and spices, it’s a great spot to head for a roast. Try the garlic and lemon chicken with sage and onion stuffing or the garlic and rosemary marinated lamb with mint sauce.

7 The Camberwell Arms, Camberwell

Head here if you want an accoladed Sunday lunch, as the the Camberwell Arm's roast has garnered a fair bit of praise in its time. The meaty mains are designed to be shared between two, or in the case of the osso bucco, bewteen three. For non-meat eaters there's enough tantalising dishes that have been blistered, charred or pureed, you can kind of build your own wonderful feast, albeit non-traditional.

8 Hare & Billet, Blackheath

The Hare & Billet seems like Blackheath’s most grown up pub. It’s quiet and sophisticated, with a separate dining area and a great range of beers – many from small local breweries. The fresh, seasonal, rustic-style British cuisine features lots of lovely pies and slow cooking delights, and their roasts are good and traditional - make sure you start the meal off with a wheel of gooey baked camembert to share.

9 The Sylvan Post, Forest Hill

This relaxed boozer is housed in a former post office and retains many original features, from the letter boxes out front to its bar fashioned from a 1960s Royal Mail desk. Known above all for its excellent craft beers, its Sunday lunch has also become a staple of Forest Hill life.

10 The Orchard, Brockley

The Orchard’s loyal clientele of locals love its Sunday roasts (the wickedly spicy bloody Marys are another key attraction). Ingredients are seasonal and sourced as locally and as independent as possible.The Sunday menu, which changes regularly, has a host of dishes on it, including a seven hour brisket and Homity Pie. With affogato, creme brulee and sticky ginger pudding on the menu too, you’ll want to save room for dessert.

11 The Princess of Wales, Blackheath

Always bustling, the Princess of Wales has an area for every occasion – tables under the TV for Sunday sports viewing, booths for crowding into with friends, high stools, low sofas, high-backed chairs and even conservatory-style dining. Tuck into a 21 day-aged beef sirloin, slow-cooked pork belly or a nut roast, and add some cauliflower cheese to your meal as well.

12 The Woolwich Equitable, Woolwich

This magnificent building dates back to 1935 and was originally the headquarters of the Woolwich Equitable Building Society. In 2016, it was beautifully refurbished to show off the double-height ceilings, grand marble columns and spectacular Art Deco glass ceiling. The Sunday roasts are served on pretty, chintzy plates handsomely stacked with roast potatoes, maple roasted parsnip and carrots, braised red cabbage, creamed leeks and kale, topped with a Yorkshire pudding and drizzled in red wine gravy.

13 The Prince Regent, Herne Hill

An excellent stop off after a stroll in Brockwell Park, The Prince Regent serves up hearty and inexpensive roasts. There’s a decent range of puddings to choose from to should you want to finish on a sweet note.
