Mums. We love them of course. But let’s face it, a day out with your mum is not really going to consist of a dirty burger, a vegan wrap or the latest twist on a trendy cocktail.

No, what is needed is a much more sophisticated plan that will give her the real London ‘wow’ factor. We’ve found the perfect place for you – the very impressive Rotunda Lounge at the Four Seasons Hotel at Ten Trinity Square.

The hotel is housed in the former Port of Authority building which is a stone throw’s away from Tower Hill station. And here, against an impressive backdrop of 1920s décor, the Bright Young Things afternoon tea is just the ticket for a fun afternoon out with your mum.

Inspired by 1920s iconography and the flapper girls of the day, tea begins with a cheeky glass of Delamotte Brut Champagne. My mum was already impressed by the sweep of the room and the in-house pianist working his way through some classic jazz tunes, but when the sandwiches arrived, I’d never seen her look happier.

Beautifully cut delicacies include the egg and truffle sandwich with watercress, coronation chicken mayonnaise and, my favourite, the heritage beetroot sandwich with chives and goat cheese mousse. Teamed with two cups of steaming Earl Grey, the sandwiches disappeared quickly.

Arriving with a theatrical flourish on a jewellery box, the beautiful cakes include a chocolate and salted caramel mousse and grapefruit cheese cake

But afternoon tea experts know that it’s not all about the sandwiches – you need to leave room for the cakes. And the Bright Young Things dessert selection doesn’t disappoint.

Arriving with a theatrical flourish on a jewellery box, these beautiful cakes and desserts include a chocolate and salted caramel mousse, a grapefruit cheese cake with a cream cheese mousse and pink grapefruit confit plus moreish homemade scones served with lashings of clotted cream.

The tea list is enormous, so make sure you ask the friendly waiters for their suggestions and you’ll enjoy some unusual blends that match the cakes perfectly. Three hours later we left the Rotunda clutching the desserts we couldn’t eat ‘to go’, having had a fantastic afternoon tea.

My mum’s verdict? Well, put it this way she’s already made a repeat booking for her book club gang.

The Bright Young Things afternoon tea is priced £45pp or £55pp with a glass of champagne.
