A night out in Soho should always be fun and full of possibilities, and new restaurant Temakinho on Old Compton Street offers the ideal spot to start things off

Offering an intriguing mash-up of Brazilian and Japanese food – think hand-rolled sushi and lip-smacking caipirinhas – alongside fantastically kitsch décor where pineapples and monkeys spring up everywhere, there’s no doubt that Temakinho is going to be fun.

But what about the food? Well, anyone who has visited Brazil lately will know that, thanks to their big Japanese population, there’s a sushi bar on every corner, and Temakinho has cleverly bought that vibe home to W1.

It’s the perfect place to share sushi rolls and tacos with your mates, though they’re all so delicious, you’ll have to eat fast. We opted for avocado and kataife pastry rolls with scallops and passion fruit sauce on top and a delicious selection of sushi rolls, including breaded salmon, banana and cream cheese (sounds terrible, but it really does work!), seared tuna, papaya, avocado with graviola and mint sauce and salmon and avocado with cream cheese with almonds on top.

The breaded salmon, banana and cream cheese sounds terrible, but it really does work!

The drinks menu is vast but we stuck to a couple of rounds of the very moreish classic caipirinhas made with Brazilian cachaca Mais Amor. Like a curry and cold beer, it’s a match made in (culinary) heaven.

The staff here are delightful and very knowledgeable about the sustainable fish they serve, so you know that you are in good hands. And judging by the packed tables surrounding us, we’re not the only ones to be charmed by the delightful Temakinho.
