Michelin Guide 2020: London’s New Three Michelin Star Restaurant
Michelin launched its 2020 guide on Monday 7 October 2019 and, in an uncharacteristic show of generosity, handed out a record number of stars – including a third star for one of Mayfair’s coolest restaurants…

The Lecture Room & Library at sketch, the Mayfair townhouse that’s Insta-famous for its quirky decor – particularly its egg loos – has proved unequivocally that it delivers on both style and substance, becoming one of only five UK restaurants to hold three stars.
Conceived by restaurateur Mourad Mazouz and the now three Michelin-starred French Masterchef Pierre Gagnaire, the restaurant, now in its 16th year, was awarded its first Michelin star in 2005 and its second star in 2012.
‘I dedicate these stars to my friend Pierre Gagnaire and our amazingly talented Head Chef Johannes Nuding who has been at the helm of the kitchen for the past six years working tirelessly to offer a cuisine based on quality and creativity,’ said Mazouz.
‘I opened sketch in 2002 to offer a little bit of happiness to every customer by bringing together food, drink, art and music under one roof,’ he continued. ‘Thank you so much to Michelin for recognising our hard work and achievements with this prestigious award.’
Other London restaurants gaining Michelin stars include La Dame de Pic by French chef Anne-Sophie Pic at Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square, which was awarded its second star, as well as Endo at the Rotunda in White City, Dysart Petersham in Richmond, Da Terra in Bethnal Green and Mãos in Shoreditch, which all gained their first Michelin stars.

But it’s not all good news. Benares, Galvin at Windows and Yauatcha Soho all lost their one-star status, while The Araki in Mayfair lost all three of its stars after the chef, Mitsuhiro Araki, moved back to Japan.
Michelin watchers were expecting Claude Bosi at Bibendum and Core by Clare Smyth to be boosted from two to three-star status, but it wasn’t to be, and many were disappointed that Cornerstone‘s Tom Brown – who has picked up awards including London’s Restaurant of the Year at the AA Hospitality Awards 2019, Best Fish & Seafood restaurant at the Hardens London Restaurant Awards 2019, and Observer Food Monthly’s Best Newcomer 2018.
London now has three restaurants with three Michelin stars – The Lecture Room & Library at sketch in Mayfair, Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, also in Mayfair, and Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea – as well as 10 two-star restaurants, listed below:
Core by Clare Smyth Claude Bosi at Bibendum Dinner by Heston Blumenthal Greenhouse Hélène Darroze at the Connaught Kitchen Table at Bubbledogs La Dame de Pic The Ledbury Le Gavroche Umu
London also has more than 50 one-Michelin star restaurants.
