The Sunday roast is one of Britain’s best-loved meals. But where’s the best beef? The Resident rounds up London’s best Sunday roasts from Islington to Deptford

1 OXBO Bankside’s Bottomless Sunday Roast
Executive Chef Paul Bates’s bottomless Sunday roast involves a never-ending menu of starters and desserts, which you help yourself to, separated by a civilised, served-at-the-table Sunday roast. And bottomless Prosecco, should you choose. Starters include everything from smoked salmon to plates of sashimi, Iberico chorizo, smoked duck and loads of lusciously dressed seasonal vegetables and salads. The roast options rotate on a weekly basis, including the likes of Josper-roasted cod with parmentier potatoes, Thanet Cauliflower and broccoli lentil dhal, and Josper-grilled corn-fed chicken. The roast sirloin of Gloucestershire beef is astounding – served pink and thickly sliced. Then it’s back to the Trader’s Tables for dessert: chocolate torte, almond Bakewell tart, mini sherry trifles, strawberry crème brûlèe, salted caramel cups that are to die for, jars of sweeties and even a cheese board option. Served Sundays from 12pm- 3.30pm. £28pp for three courses or £40pp including unlimited Prosecco.

2 South Place Chop House’s Sunday roast with bottomless wine
South Place Chop House’s traditional roast menu includes a choice of whole roast chicken with crispy potatoes and bread sauce, succulent sirloin of beef with crispy roasts and Yorkshire pudding, or tender shoulder lamb with balsamic onions and mashed potato. The meat is supplied by butcher HG Walter, based in Barons Court, and all three dishes are served alongside cauliflower cheese, seasonal vegetables and homemade gravy. Two courses are £25, three courses £30, and for a supplementary £15, you can enjoy free-flowing house red or white wine (with two courses or more). The menu also features duck cottage pie, mushroom ragout and a selection of starters and desserts. Also new are South Place’s build-your-own Bloody Mary’ – choose the colour of your tomato and your favourite garnish, among other components. Served every Sunday 12noon-5pm.

3 Plum + Spilt Milk at the Great Northern Hotel
Whether or not you’ve a train to catch, make the most of Sundays in one of the capital’s most beautiful dining rooms. Three metre high floor to ceiling sash windows allow natural light to flood in, and 120 hand blown glass pendant lights will ward off the darkest of days. An excellent value Sunday menu includes a choice of three roasts served with goose fat potatoes, and is priced at just £26.50/£32.50 for two/three courses. Choose from crispy roasted Suffolk pork belly with pickled red cabbage, apple & mustard chutney, roast sirloin of beef with Yorkshire pudding & red wine gravy or honey-glazed gammon with Savoy cabbage & parsley sauce.

4 Oblix West, The Shard 
Oblix’s Sunday Roast in the Sky elevates the beloved British classic by offering decadent dishes including the fabulous suckling pig with crispy crackling, a huge rib of beef on the bone and rotisserie duck with all the trimmings – served 32 floors up in The Shard. Succulent meats cooked slowly in the Josper oven, charcoal grill and rotisserie are accompanied by a selection of traditional side dishes in Oblix’s signature style. Choose from beef-fat roast potatoes or horseradish mashed potatoes with spring onion and chives, as well as roasted vegetables like creamed spinach and gruyere, butter roasted cauliflower and crispy capers. The Sunday roast is completed by Oblix’s twist on a Yorkshire pudding and plenty of gravy. Available Sundays 12pm-2.45pm from £32.

5 Galvin La Chapelle, Spitalfields
Galvin La Chapelle in Spitalfields offers a Jazz Sunday Lunch from 12-3pm, where you can enjoy modern and classic jazz while enjoying your roast. The three course prix fixe menu is £34.50pp, with the option of adding on a carafe of wine for £9. Choose from starters like chicken and black trumpet ballotine or salad of Heirloom tomatoes with white almond gazpacho, followed by a pot roast suprême of Landes with herb gnocchi or roast Lake District rump of beef with Yorkshire pudding, fine beans, roasted potatoes and glazed carrots. For dessert, try the chocolate Chantilly chocolate sponge cake with mandarin gel and black currant sorbet. There’s also a children’s menu for £9.50.

6 The Palmerston, East Dulwich
The Palmerston in East Dulwich, which has just overhauled its kitchen to keep its bold, modern European dishes at their best, serves up a fabulous Sunday roast. Start with some deep-fried veal sweetbreads with sauce gribiche to share with friends, and then get stuck into the faultless roast rump of 35 day aged Galloway beef, served pink, with a Yorkshire pudding the side of your head. Even the veg are delicious – garlicky green beans, carrots with crunch, parsnips and spuds that are crispy on the outside and fluffy  on the inside.

7 The Pig’s Ear, Chelsea
This award-winning gastropub is a timeless Sunday favourite. In the heart of Chelsea, this is a great place for locals and visitors who fancy a well-cooked roast. Its pork belly is melt-in-the-mouth tender and there’s a great pan-fried rump of lamb too. If you still have room for dessert, order the sticky toffee pudding. Reserve a table in the Blue Room, which adjoins the bar dining area and boasts an open fire during the winter.

8 Number 90, Hackney
Hackney’s hip canal-side hangout, Number 90, is a great spot to head to both kick off your weekend and recuperate from it, with a whopping Sunday roast and Bloody Mary combo. Sunday specials include a 12-hour slow-roast aged Derbyshire topside of beef cooked rare and served with Yorkshire puddings (£14), oven-roasted Cornwall pork belly rolled with Yorkshire pudding (£13) and homemade beetroot, mushroom and spinach Wellington (£10). All roasts are served with roasted Pipper’s potatoes, honey glazed Chantenay carrots, beetroot and broccoli. Served from 12pm till their gone, after which you can order from the regular menu.

9 Bistro Union, Clapham

10 Foxlow, Clerkenwell
Foxlow’s industrial feel with diner style booths and leather chairs make dining here a fun experience. Their Sunday roast of Longhorn beef rump served with roast potatoes, greens and bacon, roast carrots, parsnips and cauliflower cheese is perfection, but don’t miss out on their regular menu. Also worth a mention is their brunch menu, which serves up unlikely treats. Fried chicken and egg, croissant waffle, and breakfast burgers are for those looking for something fun to eat to replace the classic Sunday roast. Their fun cocktail menu features exciting drinks with names like Miami Dolphin and Smokestack Mary.

12 Paradise by Way of Kensal Green
Since chef Cat Ashton came on board at Paradise, the menu has never been more exciting, and her Sunday roasts are worth getting out of bed for. Cat has shaken up tradition with her spinach, ricotta and potato wellington (£12.50) and lemon and thyme stuffed whole poussin (£15.50), but there’s still the safe option of rump lamb with mint sauce for those who refuse to break their Sunday ceremony.

13 The Flask, Hampstead
A proper pub that, unsurprisingly, has become something of an institution in and around Hampstead. There’s nothing quite like supping on a pint of Young’s PA at the bar, but for Sunday lunch, head to the light-filled conservatory and tuck into the likes of steamed mussels or coconut, lemongrass and chilli broth to start, or go straight in for slow roast beef or, if you’re really hungry, The Chef’s Roast – a trio of beef, pork and chicken.

14 The Camberwell Arms, Camberwell
The Camberwell Arms is a great dining-style pub with some very fancy roastie offerings. Head over with a bunch of foodie friends for upscale sharing offerings like slow-roast Salt Marsh lamb shoulder and dauphinoise potatoes for five (£75), or perhaps the Welsh Black forerib, potatoes, watercress and béarnaise sauce for two to three (£75). There’s also a lovely, long list of old and new-world wines to help it all along with. Don’t dawdle though, lunch is only served from noon to 4pm.

15 The Clarence, Trafalgar Square
The newly-refurbished Clarence, just off Trafalgar Square, was allegedly Winston Churchill’s favourite watering hall. Sunday roasts, served from midday, come loaded with seasonal greens, crisp-as-you-like roasties, fist-size fluffy Yorkshire puddings and lashings of rich gravy, served in the bar and the first-floor dining room. The pub has also just introduced a traditional daily-changing gueridon service, where you dish is cooked, finished and presented at the table.

16 The Prince Bonaparte
One of the more ‘gastropubby’ options on the list, The Prince Bonparte goes in for Sunday lunch in a big way. There’s live music, bloody Marys and a choice of roast Norfolk chicken with pork stuffing at £16.50, roast beef rump cap with horseradish cream at £17.50 or carrot and parsnip Wellington at £15.50. All roasts are served with roast potatoes, carrots, greens, celeriac purée, shallot, a Yorkshire pudding and gravy. If you’ve any room left after that, we recommend the Cherry and almond tartelette with Chantilly cream for £7.

17 Minnow, Clapham
Minnow, Clapham’s latest addition to its excellent all-day dining scene, has introduced a Sunday roast to make those seasonal strolls across the common all the more appealing. Available every Sunday, the menu features constantly rotating options, which currently include a roast rib eye of beef and hay-smoked Yorkshire grouse, both with all the trimmings, plus as salt-baked kohlrabi with red cabbage and parsley roots (priced £12-£30). Created by Head Chef Jake Boyce, who previously headed up Jason Atherton’s Social Wine and Tapas, the dishes are accomplished and full of flavour.

18 Oslo, Hackney
Oslo offers a sumptuous roast alongside raw and authentic live blues acoustic sessions at their ‘Hus Av Blues’ event on Sundays. The side of music goes perfectly with their roast rump of beef or roast half chicken served with roast potatoes cooked in goose fat, parsnips, Yorkshire pudding, kale, carrots and gravy (£15/14). With the roast served from 12pm and the music from 6pm, Oslo is perfect for a laid-back Sunday.

19 The Harwood Arms, Fulham
With a Michelin star, this pub knows quality, but it’ll come at a price; however, you won’t feel slighted, as the portions will keep you full for a week. The Harwood Arms’ Sunday roast offers much more than just the everyday classics, instead you’ll find the likes of beef rump with bone marrow and Yorkshire grouse. The kitchen often changes the menu to match what’s in season. Make sure you book, The Harwood Arms fills up quickly.

20 Ceviche Old St, the City 
Ceviche Old St, Martin Morales’ Peruvian restaurant and pisco bar, has launched an alternative Sunday Roast menu that puts a Peruvian spin on old British favourites, along with a selection of bottomless cocktails. Served all day, the Sunday Roast menu offers Pollo a la Brasa, marinated rotisserie chicken (£14.50) and the vegetarian Seco de Berenjena braised aubergine (£14.50). A weekly-changing Roast of the Day may include pork, beef, duck and lamb, with dishes such as panca chilli and coriander rolled pork shoulder, roasted and served with crackling. Guests can also enjoy the made-to-order Whole Suckling Pig in a Peruvian-Japanese style marinade, which serves 10 to 12 people (£290 – please note this needs to be ordered 5 days in advance).

This East end pub with real fires, great booze and fabulous food serves up stonking roasts in its conservatory dining area with open kitchen. Huge, succulent servings of pork belly come with crispy crackling, crunchy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside roasts, seasonal veg and lashings of gravy.

22 Joanna’s, Crystal Palace
This family-run restaurant has been a fixture of Crystal Palace life since opening in 1978. Originally an American diner, it is now a modern brasserie whose goal is to serve customers simple but delicious food in elegant yet unstuffy surroundings. On Sundays, the regular a la carte menu, which already features roast pork belly and lamb rump, is boosted by an additional traditional roast offering: roast 28 day-aged rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding, duck fat roasties, seasonal vegetables (sourced from Turnips in Borough Market), beef gravy and horseradish (£17.50). Owner William Ellner is particularly proud of the gravy: ‘we make it from veal bones, which give an incredibly rich flavor’. He also speaks lovingly of the kitchen’s slow-roasting oven, which ‘breaks down fibres’ and ensures ‘perfectly tender meat’.

23 The Brookmill, Deptford
This brand new pub has been kitted out in perfect contemporary gastro-boozer style with plenty of re-purposed wood, industrial-chic lighting and accessories and a touch of Farrow & Ball. There’s a fab courtyard beer garden out back if the weather is being kind, and if not, be sure to reserve the snug under the stairs. Head Chef Olly Marlowe, previously of both Michelin-starred The Glasshouse and Chez Bruce, champions simplicity and has created a menu that celebrates classic pub grub with The Brookmill’s signature twist including, of course, Sunday roasts.

24 Ma’Plucker’s Bottomless Bird & Bubbles, Soho
Ma’Plucker is Soho’s favourite chicken spot which brings the Deep South to London’s doorstep with their signature three-way chicken: Buttermilk Fried, Chipotle Roasted and Slow-and-Low Pulled Chicken. Come weekends, you can choose the Bottomless Bird & Bubbles menu for a whole rotisserie chipotle rubbed and roasted chicken with two bases, two sauces and fries, as well as Ma’s mini doughnuts for a sweet treat and bottomless prosecco for two hours. 26 No 29 Power Station West, Battersea
Independent neighbourhood bar group Darwin & Wallace recently launched its latest contemporary neighbourhood pub, No 29 Power Station West – the only pub joining a selection of  independent traders in the iconic Battersea Power Station’s new Circus West Village. Their all-day food offering includes seasonal Sunday roasts made from locally sourced food, scratch cooked on site, including slow cooked short rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding, truffle spring cabbage, creamed roast root vegetables and minted peas (£19) and roast chicken breast with salsa verde, Yorkshire pudding, truffle spring cabbage, creamed roast root vegetables and minted peas (£16.50). Both are served with duck fat roasted potatoes and children’s portions are available for £7.5. Served from noon on Sunday.

27 Pedler, Peckham
Pedler in Peckham is usually full to the brim with south Londoners enjoying the chance to catch up with friends and family over a Sunday roast. We can highly recommend the green tea smoked beef feather blade and generously proportioned organic pig belly, but the star of the meal is the enormous plate of steaming roasties and veggies delivered with aplomb. Red cabbage, parsnips, honeyed carrots and tender brussel sprouts all cooked to perfection. And the potatoes? They’re perfect. Fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Served with all the accompaniments and some great home made gravy, we can see why the Pedler roast is so popular in SE15. Do find room for the coffee bread and butter pudding and custard! The food and atmosphere here are great but special mention must also go to the staff who cope with fussy eaters, hungover couples and families with kids with a smile on their faces. No wonder you need to book a table here – it’s the ultimate neighbourhood restaurant.
