GLOBAL CUISINE AT GALLEY, UPPER STREET
The new Galley restaurant in Angel fuses Polish heritage with global cuisine to produce a tantalising, experimental offering in a fashion forward setting full of deep greens, oranges and golds…
Sibling co-founders Oriona Robb and Marcel Grzyb have combined nostalgic memories of their childhood in Poland with fashionable design, producing a space that is both sophisticated and welcoming.
Robb worked closely with the visionary behind Galley’s design, Mika Burdett and has lived in Islington for over 12 years, resulting in a strong affinity with the area that has grown stronger each year – Upper Street in particular – making it the perfect spot for her to open a restaurant.
With her creative eye for detail, Robb saw this entire restaurant project through to its final stages and stands as the driving force behind the final result.
Raised in Poland, both Robb and Grzyb grew up in an environment centred on food. Their grandfather was the local village butcher and their mother created all her meals from scratch. Robb worked in her parent’s pizzeria and delicatessen after school and on weekends, quickly learning the ropes.
For both Robb and Grzyb, meal times were the highlight of each day, when their family would come together to talk and share wonderful intensely flavoured food.
With an innate knack for style, Robb moved to London in 1998 to pursue a fashion career and went on to build up an enviable portfolio of clients and contacts nationwide.
Having always had the dream to one day open a restaurant, she eventually combined her talents in fashion and food to open up a new Upper Street food spot with her brother, and Galley was born.
Grzyb also serves as the Head Chef, drawing inspiration from Europe, North America, Africa, South America and Asia. He has a particular talent for fish dishes, with 18 years of experience at London’s renowned fish restaurant, Randall & Aubin, 10 years of which he served as Head Chef.
With a love for fresh, seasonal, local produce and a commitment to creativity and technical skill, Grzyb has put together an unrivalled menu offering at Galley, a result of his fish expertise and knowledge of worldly cooking techniques. Helping his mother in the kitchen and working with his grandfather, preparing meat in his butchers are some of his most treasured memories.
He’s been perfecting his craft since he was 12 and is now bringing his wealth of experience to Upper Street, ready to wow locals with his experimental and unique food offering.
