Weekend brunch has reached new heights with the launch of a luxurious new menu on the 32nd floor of The Shard at Oblix, a New York-style lounge and restaurant with unparalleled views of the London skyline, from the City to Canary Wharf and beyond…

Words: Madeleine Howell

The view over the Thames from a covetable window seat at Oblix is a welcome relief after a long week traversing London via the sooty tunnels of the Northern Line, and is the perfect way to show off the city to friends visiting from overseas, or family from beyond the Metropolitan boroughs.

A backdrop of live acoustic music makes for a sophisticated feast and as we sip on a glass of champagne (complimentary with the three course brunch offering, £62 – but we highly recommend you also try a couple of their cocktails) our attentive waiter explains that for starters, we have free range of the vast deli counter, which features an array of creative rainbow salads such as beetroot crumble and courgette with feta, as well as salmon gravlax, chicken pâté, devilled eggs, fresh breads and prawn cocktails presented on ice.

Once we have had our fill, he calls for our main course. While the likes of lobster with lemon and verbena butter or grilled sirloin steak with hash browns are available, I opted for rich, scrambled duck eggs and smoked duck ham served on grilled sourdough with generous truffle shavings, and my friend chose the truffled ricotta and pancetta omelette, which even came with a decadent truffle sauce (it seems that Oblix is a destination in its own right for truffle lovers). Even our cheeky side of mac ’n’ cheese was enhanced with the stuff.

As we polish off an American Dream cocktail of tanqueray, lime, watermelon, aperol, rose and soda prettily topped with a sprinkling of borage flowers, ready to contemplate a spread of bitesize passion fruit choux buns, surprisingly light sweet potato pie, flourless chocolate goodies and boozy tiramisu (where to start?) and to round off the occasion with a strong Americano, we feel for a moment we have conquered the city.

The on-top-of-the-world feeling stays with us even as we rejoin the ants below and chug back down to Clapham Common to walk it off in the last rays of weekend sunshine, only to realise that we failed at the final hurdle and forgot the cheese course, which – regrettably – includes a creamy brie de meaux dongé and a potent cashel blue. But there’s always next time.
