The Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark has transformed its transient gallery space into a lockdown-proof lifestyle store full of premium food and drink, plants, homewares and furniture.
Menier Store, near Borough Market, is making the most of a currently unused space within the theatre building to supply its local community with staple groceries, treats and pretty things to feather the nest with while we’re all cooped up indoors for the coming weeks. There’s also a coffee bar and outdoor seating.
The Grade II-listed Menier Chocolate Factory – a Victorian warehouse built in the late 1800s when French chocolate company Menier expanded into London to provide chocolate to the masses – makes for a charming pantry-style space stocked with a grocery range curated by The Camden Grocer.
With a flagship store in Camden Market’s North Yard, the Camden Grocer team have sourced the very best in food and drink from top artisan producers, from fresh fruit and vegetables to cheese, chocolate and charcuterie, as well as the latest range of Great Taste Awards 2020 Three Star winners.
There’s also a line-up of specialist retailers including In-Tray Plants, supplying 75 varieties of houseplants and a range of pots and indoor gardening accessories; affordable-luxury Scandinavian homeware brand Att Pynta; vintage furniture upcyclers HRB Studio; and Fleming Fine Antiques.
Effectively a boutique department store in SE1, the Menier Store’s premium collection has been brought together by Southwark Square Ltd, a landlord that maximises the potential of beautiful, heritage spaces by connecting them with creators, curators and crafters.
‘We wanted the store to reflect the trends that have grown during the last few months with a focus on things to enjoy in your home – really good food, house plants and homewares’
‘Setting up the Menier Store was about quickly re-appropriating empty space and creating a conducive, relaxed and unique shopping experience in the glorious Menier Chocolate Factory,’ said Sophie Stade Cohn, Managing Director at Southwark Square Ltd.
‘We wanted the store to reflect the trends that have grown during the last few months with a focus on things to enjoy in your home – really good food, house plants and homewares.
‘We also wanted to give some young brands the opportunity to have their first physical presence in a shop and are excited to see the brands we have collaborated with grow and change over the coming months in our pop-up department store.’
