Learn with the master patissier himself – Eric Lanlard –  how to make extraordinarily fine desserts and cakes at the Cookery School at Cake Boy. The teaching style is informative and fun – the lessons are ‘hands on’! Come in groups, with a partner or a friend experience a first-class baking lesson in a stylish environment. Take home goodies include everything you have baked on the day and a Cake Boy apron. Cookery School offers a range of day and evening classes (from £125). Learn to make French breakfast pastries including buttery croissants, pain au chocolat and brioche or make the perfect afternoon tea with a three-hour lesson on British cakes, scones and savoury treats. (And yes, you can enjoy them with a cup of Tregothnan Cornish tea before you leave).

3 Leiths, West London
Leiths is the perfect place for confident cooks. The enthusiast’s courses include chef skills in patisserie, learn how to make recipes such as pear and frangipane tarts and double crust apple pie. don’t miss out on Leiths classes in gluten-free baking where you will learn how to make not just gluten-free bread, like focaccia three ways, but also pastries.

4 Bake with Maria, St John’s Wood
Maria Mayerhofer opened Bake with Maria in her kitchen in 2010. As demand outgrew her home, Maria launched the fully equipped Baking Lab in 2011 and hired a group of baking and pastry experts to help her teach students. Bake with Maria has been popular with aspiring chefs ever since. Classes usually run at 10am or 6pm and include everything from making healthy bread and French pastries to lessons in macarons and chocolate desserts. Private classes, including hen dos and children’s parties, can also be organised.

5 E5 Bakehouse, Hackney
This independent, organic bakery is one of East London’s hidden gems. E5’s experts use locally-sourced ingredients to make daily-baked loaves of bread and homemade sweet treats, and when they’re not busy baking, they share their skills during weekly classes. Want to have a go at making freshly-baked produce with a professional finish? Pizza (£70) and sourdough classes (£150) are all suitable for beginners, while the advanced bread class (£120) is aimed at those who are already familiar with sourdough baking.

6 Primrose Bakery, Covent Garden
Can’t resist cupcakes? This Primrose Hill hotspot runs classes in its Covent Garden branch on the first and third Sunday of each month. During the hour and a half session (£48 per person), the bakery’s head chefs teach students how to ice and decorate cupcakes using the brand’s signature swirl. They’ll also let you in on their piping and decorating secrets. Themed, private and corporate classes are also available.
