The Chelsea History Festival is back again to take over three west London landmarks with a packed programme for the family, which has just been announced.

Running September 16 to October 1, the festival lights up the National Army Museum, Royal Hospital Chelsea and Chelsea Physic Garden with tales from the past.

It brings together a diverse range of speakers and guest to look at how history still plays a role in current times, and a range of fun interactive events to get the kids involved.

The wonderful-sounding History Street returns for its third year and reads like an immersive experience with heft.

Historians who really know their stuff bring to life aspects of London's long past in an event that could see you and the family learning how to sword-fight before shaking the hands of Tudors, Georgians and 17th century Brits.

At History Street, you'll also have the opportunity to meet WWI and WWII soldiers, as well as currently serving military too, and the Chelsea Pensioners, veterans and residents of the Royal Hospital Chelsea will lead public tours through the hospital.

The festival will also celebrate the 350-year anniversary of London’s oldest botanical gardens, Chelsea Physic Garden with as free weekend (Sept 30 – Oct 1) when visitors will have the chance to explore the recently reopened Glasshouses which have just undergone a full restoration and are home to 1,200 plant species.

For more adult moments, Michael Palin will share the life and death of his great-uncle Harry a veteran of WWI (Sept 30) while historian Joya Chatterji will take a look at the history of South Asia, and how politics, food, leisure and household traditions have shaped the continent.

General Sir Adrian Bradshaw, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Nato Europe and Governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea will share his perspective into threats facing the United Kingdom today (Sept 26) and former solider Geraint Jones will regal his account of the evacuation of Kabul in 2021 (Sept 27).
