CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has announced the four “super-regional” pubs to make the Pub of the Year 2023 competition and a Kent boozer is on the list.

Kent pub the Nelson Arms is one of the finalists in the competition that seeks out Britain’s best pubs.

Located in Tonbridge, the Nelson Arms is less than an hour’s drive away from south London, and a good excuse for a day trip.

A neighbourhood boozer, the Nelson Arms is found on Cromer Street in a quiet residential area that is an easy walk from both the High Street and the railway station.

The pub has anywhere from six to eight beers on tap from national and local independent breweries, and up to 15 real ciders are also available along with craft keg beers.

It also puts on a traditional Sunday roast, and look out for frequent tap takeovers, quiz nights and sing arounds, where punters are invited to turn up with their acoustic instrument of choice to join in a jam.

The Nelson Arms, which also comes with a heated outside beer terrace, was a runner up in the Kent Cider Pub of the Year 2023.

The pub has also narrowly escaped being demolished. In 2018, after a year of closure, the Barden Residents Association put in an Asset of Community Value on the Nelson Arms to fight off redevelopment.

Tony Shea, West Kent CAMRA Branch Chair said: “It is such a welcoming pub with fantastic staff and a superb range of ales and ciders. It is an important part of the local community with something to offer for everyone.”

Pub of the Year 2022 Tamworth Tap in Tamworth in the West Midlands, the Isle of Man’s Trafalgar Hotel and the Beer Engine in Skipton, Yorkshire have also made the shortlist.

These four pubs now go on to compete for the National Pub of the Year title.
