On 18 March 2018, Greenwich Park will be invaded by hundreds of sausage dogs. As one of the largest green spaces in south London, the expanse of Greenwich Park is usually packed full of dogs, so it’s no surprise that the Royal Park is about to host the third, and largest, Sausage Walk London.

Organiser and Greenwich resident Grace Ang-Lygate set up the walks last September when she and her girlfriend, Catherine Hennigan, met the Instagram famous sausage dog George (@Georgethesausage) and his owner, Katherine Sofoluke.

Through the online presence of their two-year old sausage dog Mildred (@Mildredthesausage), the plan was hatched that they would publicise an informal walk on their accounts and see if anyone turned up.

Mildred & George on a playdate:

‘We live just next to Greenwich Park so we were like “okay, we’ll just organise a walk in Greenwich Park and see who comes”, but then it just turned out that over a hundred sausage dogs came to the first one,’ smiles Ang-Lygate.

Now they’re expecting the figure to reach around 300 dogs for this month’s event. ‘It was just a bit mad,’ she explains.

‘We had no idea it was going to be this big, it’s still very much an unofficial fun thing. It’s just grown.’

One of the reasons that Ang-Lygate says she moved to Greenwich in 2017 from Stratford was because of how pet-friendly it is.

‘I can take the dog to so many pubs, cafes and shops. I just think there are not many places in London quite as dog-friendly as Greenwich,’ she enthuses.

The walk will begin at St Mary’s Gate at 1pm and loop around the park before ending up at the Kings Arms pub, dachshunds in tow, on King William Walk.
