Named Best Small Hotel in the World in 2016 and Most Romantic Hotel in Europe in 2017, you know you’re onto a good thing at Edgar House. The Georgian house has been lovingly refurbished into a riverside retreat atop the ancient City Walls and overlooking the River Dee. Inside, you’ll find original working fireplaces, a sweeping staircase and boutique bedrooms in an English heritage palette with chandeliers, feature walls, rich upholstery and luxurious beds. Many of the rooms have free-standing bath tubs – one of which is an in-room, copper roll-top tub (Fabulous Junior Suite). The property’s intimate restaurant, Twenty2, serves afternoon tea and the chef’s flagship tasting menu, as well as an à la carte menu.

2 Oak House No1, Gloucestershire
This beautifully bedecked Georgian townhouse features jewel-like interiors and a colourful art collection, which fit seamlessly alongside original fireplaces, tiled floors and wood-panelling to create a cosy yet contemporary feel. In fact, Tatler calls Oak House No1 ‘the Notting Hill of the Cotswolds’. Set in the market town of Tetbury, the antiques capital of the Cotswolds, you’re just a stroll away from Prince Charles’ Highgrove shop on Long Street. The Cavalier Double Suite has a beautiful four-poster bed hung with sumptuous fabrics in swags and upholstered in fine silks – perfect for a Valentine’s Day escape. Other luxuries include cashmere throws, a silver tea set and a huge contemporary bathroom with designer fittings, power shower and bathtub. Afternoon tea is included in the room rate.

3 Abbots Grange, Worcestershire
Abbots Grange, which dates back to 1320, is a grand, adults-only property set in some eight acres of parkland and gardens with beautiful views over the Cotswolds. The grounds offer a tennis court, croquet lawn and even a helicopter landing pad – should you choose to arrive for your seductive retreat in style. The Abbots Chambers is a king size deluxe suite with a high-arched, timber-beamed ceiling, church-style windows, four-poster bed and free-standing roll-top tub in the room that grants you views over the garden. Each room or suite has an entirely different character, and each features a four-poster bed with fine Egyptian cotton sheets and thick fluffy white towels in the bathroom to set the scene for romance.

4 The Lord Poulett Arms, Somerset
This 17th century thatched inn on the borders of Somerset, Devon and Dorset is set in the conservation village of Hinton St George and surrounded by rolling countryside. A great one for foodie couples looking for a romantic meal, The Lord Poulett Arms has won numerous awards including Gastro Pub of the Year (Good Hotel Guide), National Dining Pub of the Year (Good Pub Guide), and Best Sunday Lunch in the West Country (The Observer). Tastefully furnished with a good scattering of antique furniture, there’s a cosy real fire in the restaurant. Upstairs, the Pomfrey double en suite room gets our thumbs up as the most romantic, with an exposed-brick feature wall, sleigh-style bed and in-room free-standing bath tub.

5 Frampton Cottage, Surrey
Frampton Cottage, referred to in the 1086 Domesday Book, is a beautifully restored listed B&B with low ceilings and wooden beams. Located in the conservation village of Crondall, it’s an ideal base for walkers keen to explore Surrey, Hampshire and the South Downs. Plus, with three local pubs serving good food, there are plenty of spots to keep toasty and warm. The cottage’s cosy home-from-home accommodation has wooden floorboards, a feature fireplace, four-poster bed with swags, a pretty bathroom with full-size bathtub and an open log fire to set the scene for a cosy couple’s retreat.

6 Hurst Farm, Kent
Hurst Farm in Crockham Hill, Kent, combines the best of the traditional and the contemporary with modern accommodation in a new annex to the Medieval Kentish Hall House, with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, features three en suite bedrooms, a newly built swimming pool and a grass tennis court. Rooms 1 and 2 are both king-sized en suites, perfect for a romantic escape. Room 1 has a four-poster bed and floor-to-ceiling windows, while Room 2 has a double-ended free-standing bathtub with westerly views reaching over the countryside – ideal for a sunset soak. The bed linens are all high thread count Egyptian cotton.

7 Muddifords Court Country House, Devon
This charming, Georgian property located in the Culm Valley has 14 acres of grounds with an ornamental lake and boathouse, plus five individually decorated stylish rooms. Three of the rooms have Victorian claw-footed baths – ideal for those who love a long soak to unwind – and two of them also have grand four-poster beds made for romance. There’s also a more modern, two bedroom villa. All the rooms have Egyptian cotton sheets and a cheeky decanter of sherry. Muddifords is near the Blackdown Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, plus Exmoor, Dartmoor and Devon’s North and East coasts are within a 45-minute drive.

8 The Riverside Inn, Chelmsford
The Riverside Inn is a beautifully restored 17th century mill surrounded by water. Recently refurbished for a 21st century clientele with an appreciation of heritage, the property has six boutique hotel rooms, each decked out in a unique style. The double en suite with a wrought-iron four-poster bed draped in sheer voile is our favourite. Complete with pitched ceiling and original timber beams, it’s perfect for a Valentine’s getaway. The Riverside Inn also has two restaurants – casual pub dining on the ground floor and a new top-floor restaurant by MasterChef The Professionals semi-finalist Andi Walker, due to open imminently.

9 Brasted’s, Norwich
Brasted’s is only 10 minutes from Norwich city centre, yet its setting in the picturesque village of Framingham Pigot grants it some very pretty scenery. Each of the six rooms is individually designed, and two have sumptuous four-poster beds, but it’s the cheekily named Playroom that catches the eye, with a roll top bath in the bedroom, ruby red flocked wallpaper, a sweet love seat at the foot of the bed and views of the Framingham Estate. The Squire’s Retreat also has a double bed, this time with a chaise longue at its foot for those who intend to put their feet up and let their beloved cater to their every whim. Brasted’s also has an award-winning restaurant, open Thursday to Saturday.

10 Eagle Mill, Cambridgeshire
Eagle Mill is an 18th century millworker’s cottage with a contemporary, architect-designed bed and breakfast extension. There are five rooms, each with its individual style. The Hemingford is a spacious King Superior Suite with four-poster bed and a striking in-room stone bath that’s just begging to be filled with rose petals. The Houghton King Superior Suite is almost as big, with sleigh-style bed and another wonderful in-room bath. Both also have bi-folding doors opening onto a private terrace and garden. Set within three acres of garden, orchard and paddock, the property has a countryside feel with the wondrous countryside and river walks of the Ouse valley at your feet.

11 The Old Swan Inn, Gloucestershire
The Old Swan Inn is a 16th century property in the peaceful village of Lechlade. It’s also the oldest pub in the village with a restaurant open for lunch and evening meals and a cosy open fire. The B&B has four rooms, two of which – The Radnor and The Marlborough – have exposed brick walls, original fireplaces and four-poster beds draped in delicate lace. The Marlborough also has a roll top bath, and The Radnor a free-standing bath, for those who love to relax and unwind in style. The local pubs and restaurants of Lechlade village are within a five minute walk, as is the Thames, where you can take the romance to the river on a boat tour.

12 The Old Hall, Cambridgeshire
This Cambridgeshire country retreat pairs luxurious accommodation with ornamental lakes and abundant wildlife. You’re welcomed into the reception hall by tea, cake and a roaring log fire, and if you’re not the outdoorsy type, you can enjoy fine views across countryside to Ely Cathedral, or garden terrace views, from the comfort of your room. Each room has been individually designed and furnished with antiques and handmade pieces and Egyptian cotton bed linen. The Cromwell Suite gets our vote for Valentine’s weekend, with a Belgian four-poster bed, dressing room, views of Ely Cathedral and a large, luxurious en suite bathroom with roll-top bath.

13 The Old Lock Up, Derbyshire
The Old Lockup is a 19th-century police station that has been sensitively refurbished to combine its historic original features with modern convenience. Its four characterful rooms are spacious and individually styled to reflect their heritage. The Magistrate’s Room, which would have housed the man charged with upholding the law, is the one for us, with exposed stone walls, an antique French bed and furnishings, plus a chaise longue. The hotel, situated in the picturesque market town of Wirksworth, on the edge of the Peak District National Park, is an ideal location for exploring the Derbyshire countryside. The Old Lock Up also serves breakfast and hearty evening meals like pork and mixed sausage cassoulet, but there are plenty of restaurants and pubs just a few minutes walk away.

14 Allington Manor, Lincolnshire
The Old Manor House in the tranquil Lincolnshire village of Allington is a beautifully restored Grade II Jacobean building and popular wedding venue, so it’s perfect for a romantic weekend. Steeped in history, the current manor dates back to 1450, although the original manor on the site is recorded in the Doomsday Book. Both the Lords and Ladies Superior Suites have in-room roll-top bathtubs. The Lords Room has a six-foot bateau bed, 17th century stone-surround open fire and views over the front garden and neighbouring meadow. The Ladies Room has a large four-poster bed, Georgian marble fireplace and overlooks a magnificent ash tree at the front of the house. You can also take a traditional afternoon tea in the Drawing Room.

15 St Hilda’s Boutique, North Yorkshire 
Fun-loving couples should check into St Hilda’s Boutique in Hinderwell. The five themed suites, inspired by Cairo, Paris, Los Angeles, Cape Town and Venice respectively, have been elaborately kitted out with fun features like infinity mirrors, LED showers, colossal, raised Jacuzzi bath tubs and even a circular bed. The Paris and Cairo suites have the most elaborate, tiled Jacuzzi baths that have to be seen to be believed, plus luxurious four-poster beds, while the new Los Angeles suite features a circular leather bed, a 10-foot wall-mounted Chevrolet, driven by Elvis Presley, no less, and a wardrobe that takes the form of an American gas pump. There are animals on site too, including a family of llamas.
