Oscar Wilde’s Pont Street ‘Home from Home’ Goes on Sale

This triplex three-bedroom Knightsbridge apartment isn’t just any triplex three-bedroom Knightsbridge apartment – it’s rumoured to be Oscar Wilde’s home from home…

Number 56 Pont Street was built in 1876 and designed by architect C.W. Stephens – the architect behind Claridge’s, Harrods and other notable buildings in the area. The property sits next door to a blue plaque marking the home of Sir George Alexander, an actor manager who mentions several times in historic documents that Oscar Wilde was his neighbour. In fact, Pont Street is where Wilde was arrested in 1895.

While 56 Pont Street does not itself have a blue plaque, ‘Oscar Wilde spent a lot of time in the area, and it influenced his work,’ says Simon Godson, Director of Residential Agency at JLL, which is selling the property. ‘He also had many friends on the street, so it is no surprise that he may have had a home away from home here.’

Housed within a magnificent grand Queen Anne Revival House – known colloquially as ‘Pont Street Dutch’ – this style of building was popular at the time because of its quirks, such as tall gabled red-brick façades, ornate moulded brickwork and large mullioned windows.

It was built as part of Sir Hans Sloane’s extension of the Cadogan Estate, where the architects’ brief was to move away from the neo-classical stucco brick homes that dominate the area.

’56 Pont Street is a sought-after address for fashionistas and socialites,’ adds Godson, ‘and it has been since the day it was built in the late 1800s.’

The triplex apartment is situated on the third, fourth and fifth floors of the building. The main living space, which includes a large open-plan reception room, kitchen, dining hall and guest cloakroom – is on the third floor. Above this is a luxurious master bedroom, with a large en suite and dressing room. There are a further two bedrooms both with en suites and built-in wardrobe space, as well as a large terrace providing incredible views north across Knightsbridge and Harrods.

56 Pont Street is available through JLL and Savills for £4,950,000
