Restaurant Review: Ella Canta, Mayfair

Mexican food gets a sophisticated overhaul by Martha Ortiz at one of the year’s most anticipated restaurant openings, Ella Canta

Glamour, style and delicious dishes are on the menu at new Mexican restaurant Ella Canta on Park Lane. From the moment you arrive and are greeted by a host of impossibly beautiful staff it’s difficult not to get caught up in the sheer decadence of the place, with sumptuous interiors designed by the David Collins Studio forming the backdrop to this impressive restaurant and bar.

Ella Canta is the brainchild of culinary star Martha Ortiz who has brought her version of sophisticated Mexican cooking to Mayfair. It’s out with stodgy enchiladas and refried beans and in with elegant cooking and moreish modern dishes that will get you asking: is this really Mexican food?

Guacamole fans will go nuts for Ella Canta’s signature starter – the most pimped-up guacamole I have ever seen complete with ricotta, pomegranate seeds and a crunchy gold grasshopper to top it off. Try it with the very superior house margarita Calavera made with Patrón Silver Tequila and you’ll be Instagramming your table before the main courses even arrive.

Stand out mains include the Nobu-inspired black cod with potato and chilli and the must-have Pato al mole negro – duck with plantain purée, red rice and black mole sauce. As you’d expect of a restaurant of this calibre, the Central and South American wines have been carefully chosen to complement the menu. Ask your waiter for recommendations to go with the dishes you’ve chosen and you can’t go wrong.

While dinner here is not cheap, it’s the sort of destination restaurant you’ll be talking about months after you’ve visited

Unlike other Mexican restaurants whose dessert selection is woeful, Ella Canta comes up trumps here too. We couldn’t resist the cheeky Mexican churros with caramel and chocolate. Like the rest of the dishes, it totally punched above its weight.

While dinner here is not cheap, it’s the sort of destination restaurant you’ll be talking about months after you’ve visited and it’s definitely worth the bill. Alternatively, drinks at the bar will give you the whole Ella Canta experience without your bank manager having a heart attack.
